Surround Yourself With the Right People - 113

Dealing with people can be difficult when playing music.

This is the other stuff!

This is what most don't think about when they start to become musicians.

We tend to focus on what is in front of us, like:

  • A challenge
  • A new riff
  • A new scale
  • A new song or setlist
  • New Chords or Rhythms
  • Getting our gear together.

But dealing with people may be the most important one of all .

Music is a people business. We are always dealing with people. We need someone to learn from, play with, to see us play, and to watch us online.

You have to know how to interact with those people on many different levels. This can be a very complex undertaking.

People skills that a musician needs to learn are:

  1. One on one
  2. Small group mentality
  3. Large group mentality

When you deal with music you are dealing with a very stron topic. It's emotional to all who are involved. Everyone has strong opinions about what they want or like in music. Saying the wrong thing at the wrong time can cause serious problems that last a very long time.

When I think about all of the different musicial situations ive been in, I started to see some things:

The bands I remember fondly had several positive people in them

The situations that were negative, were nine times out of ten, that way because of difficult people.

Today I’m going to go over the four types of players to surround yourself with to have a happy, calm, and productive musical situation.

Here is the article I mentioned in the podcast:
