How do I Increase My Motivation to Practice Every Day? - 5 Minute Fix - 420
Feeling stuck or unmotivated to pick up the guitar lately? This episode is for you. Here’s a simple mental shift to help you show up consistently—even when life gets hectic.
The Question
"Why can't I stay motivated to practice with everything else that's going on?"
— Bruce (listener)
This is something I hear all the time. We usually blame it on a lack of discipline, but that’s rarely the real issue. More often, it’s mental load.
We’re overloaded with tasks, decisions, and distractions. When that happens, even something we love—like guitar—can start to feel like just another thing on the list.
So how do we fix it?
Step 1: Rethink Your Practice Expectations
You don’t need to practice for hours. In fact…
Short, daily practice is more effective than long, inconsistent sessions.
The benefits of consistent, bite-sized practice sessions are huge:
- Less pressure
- Easier to start
- Progress happens without burnout
If you're stuck thinking “I need a whole hour to make this count,” you’ll rarely start. But five minutes? You can do that—even on a busy day.
Step 2: Use the “Three Practice Baskets” System
Here’s a mental framework I teach to keep your practice organized and motivating:
Basket 1: Struggle Zone (New Material)
This is where you work through things that aren’t comfortable yet. This is where real growth happens.
Basket 2: Refining Zone (Good but Needs Work)
This is where you polish what’s already working. You’ll start noticing your playing smooth out and become more consistent.
Basket 3: Victory Zone (What You Enjoy Playing)
This is where you play things you’re proud of. Use this section to boost confidence and enjoy the payoff.
Rotate your time between these baskets. It keeps your practice balanced and interesting.
3 Quick Motivation Fixes
1. Shrink the Target
Don’t aim for perfection or long sessions.
Aim for momentum.
If you’ve got five minutes, use them.
Motivation comes from doing, not waiting.
Momentum → Motivation
2. Tie Practice to a Daily Trigger
Connect your practice to something you already do every day.
Examples:
- Right after your morning coffee
- As a break between tasks
- Right before bed
Make practice part of your routine—not something you have to “remember” to do.
3. Choose Joy Over the Grind
Don’t treat guitar like homework.
- Play something fun
- Improvise for a few minutes
- Mix in the hard stuff with music you love
Remind yourself: you play guitar because it feels good—not because it’s a chore.
