Are You Holding Your Guitar Correctly to Play BETTER? - 5-Minute Fix – Episode 54
Holding the guitar the wrong way might be the reason you’re struggling with your chords, buzzing strings, or finger pain. Let’s fix that today with a few simple adjustments.
Why This Matters
If you’ve been struggling with:
- Buzzing or muted notes
- Sore fingers and wrists
- Feeling awkward or cramped when playing
…it might not be your skill level — it might be your guitar position.
This lesson walks you through how to hold your guitar so you play more comfortably, sound better, and avoid injuries long-term.
Step 1: Seated Position Basics
Start with good posture:
- Sit forward in your chair or stool
- Keep your back straight
- Let your shoulders relax
Then choose your playing style:
- Folk/Popular Position: Guitar rests on your right leg
- Classical Position: Guitar rests on your left leg, bringing the neck more forward and up
For most players in popular styles, the right leg position is preferred.
Adjust the neck angle slightly upward so it’s easy to reach chords without straining your wrist.
Step 2: Use a Strap (Even While Sitting)
This is a game-changer.
A strap helps keep the guitar in the same position whether you’re sitting or standing.
Set your strap so that the guitar sits just above your leg — this keeps the neck steady and your body relaxed. Without a strap, players tend to hunch, lean, or press the guitar into their chest, which kills tone and ruins posture.
With a strap:
- You sit straighter
- The guitar resonates better
- Your technique becomes more consistent
Step 3: Set Up Your Picking Arm
Rest your picking arm gently on the edge of the guitar body.
- Don’t press hard — just enough to guide motion
- Keep the wrist loose for strumming
- Use the forearm to help stabilize and guide your picking
If your pick feels stiff or tense, try gripping it just firmly enough that it doesn’t fly away — but not so tight that you push the strings out of tune.
Step 4: Set Up Your Fretting Hand
Pay close attention to your thumb placement.
Instead of grabbing the neck, bring your thumb behind the neck, near the middle. This lets your fingers come straight down on the strings — essential for clean chords and scale shapes.
Finger placement tip:
- Place your finger just behind the fret, not too far back
- Don’t press directly on top of the fret
- Stay relaxed and adjust for each chord — your thumb doesn’t have to stay in the same place all the time
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Playing with the guitar flat on your lap
- Difficult angle for fingers and neck
- Limits visibility and reach
- Tensing shoulders and leaning forward
- Causes back pain and shortens your practice time
- Makes you forget to breathe (yes, really)
- Setting the guitar too high or too low
- Too high = elbows flared out
- Too low = arms overstretched
- The sweet spot is mid-height, where your arms feel relaxed and natural
Practice Mission
Take 5 minutes tonight to do this:
- Sit down and adjust your posture
- Add a strap and tweak the height
- Get your arms and wrists in a position that feels natural, not strained
- Play through something simple and notice the difference in sound and feel
This is your foundation. If your body feels good when you play, your confidence and consistency will follow.
