Start Playing Guitar With Confidence - 411
Feeling unsure every time you pick up the guitar? In this episode, I’ll show you how to stop second-guessing and finally start playing with confidence — no matter how long you’ve been at it.
Why Confidence Is the Missing Piece
Many players—beginner and intermediate alike—struggle with a common feeling:
“I’m not a real guitar player.”
Even if you:
- Own good gear
- Practice regularly
- Know a few things
You might still feel stuck, uncertain, or like an imposter. Why?
Because you’re hoping your playing will sound good… instead of knowing it will.
Hope vs. Confidence
Most players start out hoping their next chord or note will sound right.
But confidence comes when you play something simple, clean, and repeatable—without guessing.
Confidence doesn’t require perfection!
It comes from:
- Mastering the basics
- Accepting where you are right now
- Having a path you trust
3 Big Confidence Killers (and How to Fix Them)
1. Feeling Awkward Holding the Guitar
This affects:
- Tone
- Posture
- Your desire to even practice
Fix:
Set up your playing position for success—whether acoustic or electric.
Use a strap. Sit up straight. Make sure the guitar’s weight isn’t collapsing your sound.
2. Jumping Around Too Much
Most beginners chase too many lessons, licks, or tips at once.
They move on before finishing one thing, and their skills never lock in.
Fix:
Stick to one path at a time. Even if it’s simple, follow it through.
Simplicity done well builds confidence.
3. Comparing Yourself to Others
You hear someone rip through a solo and immediately think, “I’ll never be that good.”
But they’ve been playing for years. And you? Maybe months or weeks.
Fix:
Compare yourself only to where you were yesterday.
That’s where real progress—and confidence—lives.
So What Does Confidence Look Like?
Confidence is being settled in where you are.
It’s saying, “I’m still learning—but what I do know, I can play well.”
Even a simple F major arpeggio, played clean and in time, shows confidence.
Not because it’s flashy.
Because it’s intentional.
A Two-Part Practice System
To build confidence, break your practice into two parts:
- The Foundry (Work Zone)
Where you experiment, learn new things, and mess up.
This is your growth zone. - The Refinery (Polish Zone)
Where you take what works and play it cleanly, repeatedly, and confidently.
This is your performance zone.
Both parts are essential—but the polish zone is where confidence is built.
Stop Winging It. Start Owning It.
If you’ve ever said:
- “I don’t know any full songs”
- “I just play bits and pieces”
- “I’ve never played for someone else”
Then it’s time to change that.
Pick a song. Learn it from start to finish.
Not just the cool riff. The whole thing.
It’s yours now—and that’s a huge confidence booster.
Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection
So many players get stuck thinking:
“If it’s not perfect, I can’t move on.”
But that’s a trap.
Perfection isn’t the goal—forward motion is.
You’re supposed to play messy things in your practice zone.
That’s what it’s for. Celebrate what you can play, and keep building!
